How about getting someone who is on the lower end of the 20-34 age
range to actually submit the listing?

I was a bit frustrated by a reply I received from a MetroMix editor,
regarding the advertising of
Rochester NY's Weekly Thursday Contra.
"I received your note and wanted to tell you that we excluded your listing
feeling that it's not appropriate for our target demo of 20-34."
Has anyone experienced this sort of rebuff? What is the appropriate way to
deal with it?
The advertising is free, so the only way I can think is to get the person
to a dance.

Once again, this year at the Ralph Page Dance Legacy Weekend, we will be
shoving a bunch of tables together and having a lunch gathering of
people on the SharedWeight lists. A relaxed gathering of people who want
to talk about calling, dance music or organizing a dance series. Always
enjoyable, interesting and informative.
Hope to see you there! Look for tables pushed together at the back of
the dining hall with a SharedWeight sign.
Happy dancing!

Hello everyone!!
Today is the 4th anniversary of the first post to SharedWeight. Seth
Seeger and I continue to be thrilled about how SharedWeight has grown
and evolved. And it's all due to your thoughtfulness, willingness to
help and energy. We now have around 200 members across 3 lists.
Thank you for your participation!! It's people like you that help keep
American traditional dance going and will carry it into the future.
Happy Dancing!!

Hi all,
There has been an interesting discussion on the shared weight callers list, which is relevant to us as organizers.
Basically, one of the newer/developing callers was sharing her frustration about feeling shut out of the "bigger" gigs, in part because some of those organizers weren't interested in experimenting with "untested" talent, in part because they wanted to maintain certain 'standards' of skill and performance.
I could see her point, as a caller wanting other gigs, but also can see the point of the organizers, whose first responsibility is not necessarily to cultivate growth in the caller/musician community but is rather to run a series that meets the expectations of the dancers and the organizers themselves.
Anyhow, I was curious about what the rest of you organizer folks might think about this tension and how you've balanced it.
I'll send a condensed version of the content of the caller emails (without names and extraneous details) in a subsequent msg.

Chrissy Fowler noted, and Melody Ball responded, regarding an incident
at a dance, in which a dancer requested organizers' assistance regarding
a restraining order against another dancer.
As a preface, I am not a lawyer -- they won't even let me play one on
TV. BUT....
This is something way over the heads of organizers to deal with. Court
orders (assuming one actually exists) are full of details to which
outsiders are not privy, and should be reviewed by those with the
experience and authority to enforce them, such as the local police or
sheriff. In this case, I feel the proper course of action is to request
that the complaining woman call the local authorities, and let the
parties involved sort it all out.
The only responsibility of the organizers should be to assure the safety
of the participants at the dance (including the two disputing parties)
until competent assistance arrives.
Pitfalls to the layperson (including dance organizers):
a. Is there actually a restraining order in existence? What are its
provisions as to locations, times, conditions, responses, remedies, etc.?
b. What was the fine print in the purported restraining order about
required and/or prohibited conduct on the part of the woman?
c. What if the man had been at the dance first, claiming to not know she
was coming? What are your responsibilities to him, as a paying customer?
d. Could a woman purposefully follow a man and press charges if he was
already at the dance and she came within the restricted distance from
him? What liability could the dance organizers face if he felt they
assisted in a persecution?
The list goes sadly on and on, in our unfortunately litigious society.

Hello all,
I would handle this type of incident as I would any other disturbance at
a dance (e.g. arguments, fights, drunkenness, inappropriate behavior or
language). Ask the offending party (parties) to [1] restrain their
behavior, and if it continues [2] leave the dance, and if that is
ineffective [3] summon a law enforcement officer. I wouldn't presume to be
judge, jury, police re a restraining order, nor attempt to enforce it.
Fortunately, in 25 years of managing contradances, beyond overexuberant
dancing and an occasional interpersonal exchange with raised voices, and a
tispy person or two, I've never had the opportunity to go beyond solution
[1]. The contradance clientele in these parts are pretty mellow.
