Hi Peggy,
Although this is not about a dance organization, I am a member of a small statewide
non-profit volunteer organization in Oregon and have been on its Board for years. (The
organization is the Oregon Forage and Grassland Council.) Maybe this can be of some help.
The Board contains about 12 people, all elected from the membership. Terms are 3 years,
with a limit of 2 terms. Elections are staggered: only 1/3 of the board members are up for
election each year. The board members choose the president and vice-president from the
board. Those positions are for 2 years, and except for exceptions cannot be repeated
consecutively. The secretary and treasurer are two separate roles -- they can be from the
board but they can also be organization member who are not on the board.
This system has worked reasonably well. But the pros and cons have to be balanced out.
Identifying new folks to serve on the board is indeed challenging, but we've been able
to do it when we worked hard about it, especially talking directly to folks to apply.
Board meetings are held monthly on Zoom. The agenda follows basic parliamentary procedure,
so these meetings rarely take more than one hour.
All the activities of the organization are organized and conducted by committees. These
report to the board at each board meeting. Each committee must contain one board member,
although that person may or may not be the committee chair.
Good luck with your organization.

Peggy - great question. It will be fascinating to watch the different answers.
In Atlanta, the contra dance board (Steering Committee) has nine members, each serving a
three year term. The terms are staggered, so that three rotate off each year. At the start
of each term we elect new officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer). In
practice the Treasurer remains the same for 3 years, due to all the trouble to change over
bank accounts and such.

Subject: [External] [Organizers] administrative question
Hello! I’ve finally found the opportunity to join this group, and I’d like to ask a
question. Do any of your contra boards have term limits, and or required rotation of
officers?
Thanks, Peg
