Hi, I've been trying to open a business bank
account and ran into the
problem that we are not legally established as an organization. I
understand we could become a corporation, but in speaking with the bank,
all we would need to be is an unincorporated association. Has anyone done
this? It's not like we have money to pay a lawyer, so I'm looking to see if
I can find the forms online or through another group that has already done
this. We are not looking for non-profit status. Just a way to open a
business bank account. I would also be interested in organizers who opened
a personal bank account and how they handled the tax consequences.
Thanks for any comments,
We opened an account by getting a Federal Employer's Identification
Number (FEIN). This was a fairly simple process. We filled out a form
and mailed it to the IRS and were mailed a number in return. This is
the first step down the road to incorporation, but was all that the bank
required to allow us to open an account. Check the IRS website. I'm
sure there will be instructions on how to apply for an FEIN there.
