Thanks for all the input and good ideas! It looks like snacks are in.
My favorite snack was gleaned from a bicycling event -- bananas, sliced
thru the skin lengthwise then cut in inch or two pieces. Easy and
non-messy.

New subject: [Organizers] Break Snacks
One of our local (Burlington VT) dances has people designated to bring
cookies, then they go for 25 cents each. The other dance is totally
pot luck, and I'd guess on average 10% bring something.
Other dances I've been to with potluck snacks (Norwich VT and
sometimes Montpelier) have a lot higher participation. Perhaps the
significant difference is those are all on weekends so more people
have an opportunity to buy/make something without thinking too far
ahead and they aren't coming straight from work to the dance.
