I find Monkey in the Middle (by Sherry Nevins) a friendly variant of Ninepins. You are choosing a partner rather than scrambling and a person feeling left out.

Here is a dance I got from Down Under Contra by Keith Wood. I have
only called it once, but it worked pretty well. I think it needs a
fairly special occasion to work.
Star Wars
Peter Foster
Duple Improper
1 – Right hand star once around
2 – Neighbor swing (on original side)
3 – Circle right 3/4, pass through across the set with partner (pass
neighbor by left shoulder) to meet a couple from the adjacent set
4 – Left hand star with this couple once around
5 – Right hand star with original couple once around
6 – Partner swing (on gent’s original side)
7 – Ladies chain over to neighbor
8 – Left hand star (finish facing new neighbors)
You need to have more than one set for this dance. Have the sets close
together so they don’t have to travel too far to meet couples from
adjacent lines and then return home. Couples on the outside can
allemande left.

Q: How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?
A: It depends on what dance you call!

For those of us lucky enough to be calling on May the Fourth (or it’s
sister holiday, Revenge of the Fifth): Anyone have some Star Wars-themed
dances to recommend?
Cheers,
Maia
Hi all,
Just found a dance card with no name, and I'm sure somebody out there
can plug it into the dance-o-matic* and tell me what it is.
A1 N b&s
A2 M alle L 1-1/2; P sw
B1 Lines of 4 down the hall, turn as cpls, return and bend.
B2 Balance ring, circle L 1/2; Ladies chain
Kalia Kliban
*and wouldn't that be a good name for a dance?
Amy,
Were you able to try this one out? How did it go?

Just make sure that if it is a wedding, you have some sort of clause that adds money for every half hour you are delayed by the hirers from performing! Too many weddings have asked us to start incredibly late with no additional payment.

In Erik Hoffman's book "Old-time Dance Calling for Weddings, Parties and
One-Night Stands" he shows a good sample contract. It's an excellent
reference book for anyone who does party gigs and one-off events. Erik,
are you on this list? Would you be willing to share that contract?
