Hi all
I'm posting this to several different callers' lists (ECD,
trad-dance-callers and shared weight) in hopes of some speedy advice.
I'm heading off shortly (Weds. evening, 6/8) for an event that is not a
dance event, but at which I've been asked to lead a short community
dance session on "honky tonk night." The band for this is _not_ a
traditional dance band. They're more of a garage band with bar-band
aspirations. I wrote to them several weeks ago to check in about music,
and when I didn't hear back, wrote again about a week ago. Then again,
and finally heard back right as I was getting ready to leave for the
airport for a weekend gig, from which I've just returned.
Their contact person tells me that sheet music would be useful, which
puts me in the position of trying to figure out a very small assortment
of tunes to send them. We're doing about 1/2 hour of dancing, so at the
most it'll be 3 dances. With 2 jigs and 2 reels I can make this work.
The question is "which ones?" And that's where you all come in. I'm
looking for recommendations for a small assortment of simple, enjoyable
tunes for community dancing. As a non-musican, I have no idea which
tunes are easy to pick up quickly and which aren't, so I'm hoping some
of you can help me out.

Tricky. But a couple of things come to mind. Be sure and tell the band
not to break in to a vocal while you're calling. (This might seem to be
a given, but it's NOT.) Pick tunes that the band might be familiar with
(and not really need the sheet, which is bound to be a better result
anyhow.) I'm thinking Turkey in the Straw, Red Wing (if they've ever
eaten ice cream from a truck, they already know half of it), Arkansas
Traveller maybe (I'm a Little Baby Bumble Bee). That should be enough.
Forget the jigs.
Also, make sure that you work on starting and stopping. And make sure
that the band knows that they can't stop until you give them the signal
(whether it's foot up or whatever.) Make sure it's clear that you're in
charge of the tempos (and give them a clear tempo at the beginning), and
the endings (the dance is not over till I say it is). Yes, you have to
take charge. It'll be better for everyone.
And more likely to be a success for both you and the band.

Honky Tonk night?! Consider using La Bastringue. It's a circle mixer that's great
for beginner dancers. The music in a simplified format can be relatively easy. The name
translates to --- honky tonk!

La Bastringue is definitely on my short list of regular party dances,
but I don't know if the tune is simple or not. That's what I was asking
to find out. I'm looking for easy-to-learn tunes for all those "any jig
or reel" dances in my collection.

You can call La Bastringue to a mash-up of any tune they can play (e.g. Ring of Fire,
Freebird, Melancholy Baby)... although it might work better with a partner right &
left allemande, then a short swing, then promenade.

something they know & can have fun with at the right speed. Maybe you can choose
something from their tune list -Jambalaya is great, and only 2 chords. Johnny B. Goode can

anything will be 32-bars.I'd request NO vocals, though, or it's too hard for the
dancers to focus on the calls.

I second the suggestion for leaving out the jigs. If this is a 'garage'
band they may not know how to play a jig. If you select strongly phrased
tunes the dancers will lock into them and everyone, more or less, will
dance on the phrase. Golden Slippers comes to mind.

Is there any of the band's music you can listen to--e.g., on
their web site, on YouTube, free samples (and modestly-priced
full tracks) on CD Baby, ...? (It seems a bit late in the game
for them to get you a physical CD.) If there is, maybe you can
identify some pieces that would be suitable for your purposes,
though perhaps with some modifications (omitting any lyrics,
adjusting the tempo, eliminating breaks).
And yes, I realize (and you should, too), that bands might
differ in how clearly they would understand details of a request
to modify the arrangement of a tune, in how happy they'd be about
accommodating such a request, and in reliable they'd be about
remembering to play the modified arrangement and not slipping
into their usual version.

has lead sheets to several tunes with which they might be familiar. Even if they grew up
with ipads in their hands, they've probably heard "Camptown Races" and
"Oh! Susanna." Also shown here are Nelly Bly, Old Black Joe, and Angeline the
Baker, which are super simple to play. Someone else mentioned "Turkey in the
Straw" and they likely know that.
It might make sense to create a dubbed recording of several tunes such as "Camptown
Races" (my link has a MIDI file) and use that; the band could play along or take
their break. (MUCCy types might object to the use of recorded music. I've never gotten
push-back from a onzie audience.)
While I've always enjoyed the challenge of working with a new band, and a
new-to-this-type-of-dancing band, IMHO they should at least make an attempt to meet you
halfway. (Some years back I removed a group from my Rolodex because, despite their fan
base with potential clients, they would not respond to e-mails, phone calls, nor texts
from me. They finally responded after our first mutual client nudged them. When I
requested their availability for a subsequent gig, it was radio silence; after my second
attempt in a week, I went with another group who replied promptly.)
I digress. Sometimes a booker's vision doesn't line up with reality:
--this band played for our wedding, surely for our anniversary party they can provide
contra dance music
--this group is holding a jam session, and you're already leading a dance workshop;
surely they can provide live music for your dance
--our church string band would like to play for the dance
For those following along at home, you'd request a tune list, then pick some tunes
(perhaps creating some medleys), then provide them with Dance Band 101.

Bands are always happier and sound better when they play their own music. Tell them you
need 32 bars, no vocals, repeat until you signal them. Get a list of ten, focus in on the
three or four you'll recognize, give them a listen on YouTube. Then call community
dances as previously suggested. Simple circles and stuff like the Virginia Reel don't
depend on the dancers sticking to the phrase. If they fall off, keep calling until
it's time to stop and if the band ends after you finish calling, clap hands, stomp
feet, whoop it up and celebrate. I love it when three or four lines of Virginia Reel turn
into a competition :-)
Dances like this are all about fun and energy not about doing the dances correctly or what
tunes the band plays. Play the role of Funmeister for this one and it will be a roaring
success.

I'm heading off shortly (Weds. evening, 6/8) for an event that is not a
dance event, but at which I've been asked to lead a short community
dance session on "honky tonk night." The band for this is _not_ a
traditional dance band. They're more of a garage band with bar-band
aspirations. I wrote to them several weeks ago to check in about music,
and when I didn't hear back, wrote again about a week ago. Then again,
and finally heard back right as I was getting ready to leave for the
airport for a weekend gig, from which I've just returned.
Their contact person tells me that sheet music would be useful, which
puts me in the position of trying to figure out a very small assortment
of tunes to send them. We're doing about 1/2 hour of dancing, so at the
most it'll be 3 dances. With 2 jigs and 2 reels I can make this work.
The question is "which ones?" And that's where you all come in. I'm
looking for recommendations for a small assortment of simple, enjoyable
tunes for community dancing. As a non-musican, I have no idea which
tunes are easy to pick up quickly and which aren't, so I'm hoping some
of you can help me out.
