Seth,  Texas A&M uses the term "Howdy" and also "Fish Camp" and both have square or hoedown dances for the freshman entering college. At no time do they mention dance until they enter the hall. I call for several colleges, but it's always thru Baptist or Methodist student ministry.

I'm working on a blurb to convince administrators at a local college to include barn dancing/community dancing as part of their orientation program.

I'm trying to come up with the best name for it.

"Community Dance" doesn't feel like a good fit, it is not open to the community, it is for the incoming Freshman and/or their student leaders.

"Barn Dance" has me worried about hokey/uncool - setting up students to be opposed to it from the beginning.

"Ceilidh," although hard to spell, does have cool Irish panache about it. Perhaps "American Ceilid

I don't want to use 'Contra dance' because that is simply confusing - and it won't be contra.

I don't want to just say "Dance" because then people will think like their HS prom.

I know you, hive mind, have already dealt with this problem and have a fabulous solution for it. What is it?

Also, any hints on blurbs? Here is my draft:

"American Ceilidh" is an active, engaging ice breaker that brings your group together. All dances are taught quickly, and participants will moving to music in circles, squares, and other formations in minutes. You can be certain that all involved will amble away happy and eager to dance more!
