Hi Tony,
We have been calling it Square Dancing since before 1650, so it seems as though it would be a shame to change it now!

I love the fact that many of the elements of today's square dancing are all there back in 1650.  Concepts such as Heads & Sides, and Visiting Squares already existed.  Moves like Grand Square were in place.  And there were sequences that would fit right into a current square dance like: Heads Go Forward & Back, Sides Go Forward & Back, Heads Go Forward, Pair Off with your Opposite, Split the Sides, Separate & Go Home, Everone Swing your Partner.  Of course they didn't use the same words as we use now!

I call those 1650 square, and traditional English squares, and all the American styles of squares and I see them as all parts of the same wonderful spectrum of square dancing.

So I would definitely just continue to call it square dancing.

I wouldn't worry about the term outside the calling community.  Most dancers do what the caller tells them to and don't care what it is called. And Joe Public thinks it is the same a Line Dancing, so changing the name won't help!

Happy dancing,
John
