Hi, everyone! My name is Olivia Barry. I am a member of the CDSS Community
Culture & Safety Task Group (CCSTG). We are a volunteer group of board and
community members working to compile a set of resources and examples for
folk who are ready to dive in to work on safety of all kinds on the dance
floor or music circle. An important element of such an effort is a *Statement
of Community Values*. The goal of this statement is to identify core
values for a local group. Core values communicate to the outside world what
is important to you and what people can expect from your organization or
events. In our last strategic planning process, CDSS identified core values
for our work and we want to help local groups do the same.
To assist groups in creating such a statement, the CCSTG aims to create a
clearinghouse of samples for local communities across our constituency, and
to synthesize existing examples into a succinct template or writing guide
to help groups develop a statement of their own. We are asking our
communities to fill out a short survey related to content that has already
been developed surrounding your *community's values* to serve as examples.
Other topics will be developed as this work unfolds, and we'll be sending
additional short surveys as well as progress reports in the coming months.
Please take a moment to fill out the survey to help identify who among you
has resources on this topic that might be valuable to others:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdwSUqM9dNCnMO-yjTawH8vi1Mv_4TuQMQ…
Thank you in advance for any and all information you share! We hope this
project will reflect and support the greater music, song, and dance
community. If you would like to contact us with questions or content,
please email CDSS.SafetyTG(a)gmail.com!
Have a wonderful weekend,
Olivia

Let’s Talk About Reentry: Recommendations and Q&A for Organizers
Wednesday, July 8, 7:30-9:00 p.m. EDT
Don’t miss this pivotal Web Chat! We’ll address the BIG questions on
organizers’ minds: How can we keep our communities safe in a pandemic? When
can we dance and sing in the same place again? What does it mean to be a
dance/music/song organizer when we can’t be together?
We’ll be joined by several guests providing their perspectives, including a
dancing MD, a COVID contact tracer, and music, dance, and song organizers
from far and wide. After hearing from these folks, we’ll open it up for
questions, comments, and discussion with participants. And we’ll be ready
with breakout rooms for smaller chats among organizers of like traditions.
REGISTER online by July 6.
https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMvceirrj8vG93vJNlBhHT5YtVTc3aESU…
Soon after you register, you’ll receive a confirmation email from Zoom with
your personal link for joining the Web Chat. To keep track of this info, w
e recommend saving the email and/or creating a calendar event.
Please spread the word about this crucial Web Chat!
Questions? Contact resources(a)cdss.org.
Hello Shared Weight community,
I’m sorry for the short notice, but I need to move the mailing lists to a different host this evening. There will be some down time between now and 10pm EST. No messages will be lost, though there may be duplicates in the digests.
I’ll send another email once the move is complete.
Nitty gritty details: AWS hosting looked like the right option, but their pricing structure is not clear. Turns out to cost nearly 2x what I had expected. I am moving us (back) to Linode, where we should have stayed all along. Better service, clear pricing, good support.

Hello fellow song organizer list members,
I’m reaching out on behalf of CDSS regarding two items that we hope may be
of interest to some of you.
*1. Are you offering any online events for traditional song (or
music/dance)?*
Many of you may know of this but in case you don't.... CDSS is maintaining
an extensive list of online events and we would be happy to include your
events as part of the list. Events can be free, by donation, or involve a
fee. Take a quick peek - there are jam sessions, online concerts,
workshops, sings, etc.
We’ve been sharing the event listing widely through our network and we
feature a handful of events each week through social media.
Check out the event listing here:
https://www.cdss.org/community/covid19/online-events
Submit an online event here:
https://www.cdss.org/community/events-calendar/submit-an-event
*2. Do you know of great resources for children and parents who enjoy
traditional dance, music, and/or song?*
We would love to include them as part of the new Families section of our
Resource Portal which is officially launching this weekend. A few notes:
-These particular resources need to be free (or for sale in the CDSS
store).
-If you’re not familiar with other sections of our Resource Portal, the
format of resources vary greatly (e.g., link to external website; online
video; audio clip; PDF of an activity).
-At this critical time of physical distancing, we're particularly looking
for resources that parents can access online. However, we welcome other
resources as well (e.g., lists of books they can find in their local
library).
Check out the Families section here (in development):
https://www.cdss.org/resources/resource-portal/families
Submit a resource here: https://www.cdss.org/share-your-resource
With thanks!

Dear All,
Do you have any favorite songs to use to start a singing session? Or
techniques. I'm interested in the general topic of encouraging people to
sing (instead of sitting, silent and polite, with mouths firmly closed).
Any thoughts, please share, on or off list.
Ridge
(ps -- not sure why the list address came up as "none" but I can't seem to
shake it. ???

When you stumble, make it part of the dance.
Song Organizers:
With signing events being cancelled right and left, there’s a promising thread on Mudcat, about holding song circles and sing-arounds by conference call or other remote means.
https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=167450&messages=6
One problem is latency — delay on the part of one or more participants — which makes group or harmony singing a problem. But I hope the Mudcat discussion will share folks' experiments with ‘remote’ sing-arounds, share what providers and procedures work best, and generate some useful information and ideas.
So let’s stay tuned, and share what we try and what we learn.

Hi Ridge, nice to meet you. I flubbed the signup process because I didn't
read the instructions. Why? In the last two months I have had shoulder
surgery and the flu and both my parents passed away. In the greater scheme
of things, I am in fact feeling a bit "Nonesuch" these days, and grateful
to Amanda for knowing what the problem is.
To differentiate myself from Lynn Feingold (and vice versa), I go by LynN
(pronounced Linen) while she goes by Flynn. I'll make sure to sign this
list with my full name for clarity.

Ridge, not a foolish question, and I have an answer:
The previous message came from Lynn Noel.
If a list member does not include their first and last name when they
subscribe to this list, the system enters their name as "None." As far as I
know there is no workaround for this, nor is there a way to add a name
later, so it's very important that we all sign our emails with our names
(and locations) so that we can identify the sender.
We make the most of what we have. I've already communicated a wish that
this might be editable, at least on the back end, in the future.
