In Columbia, MO, we usually have two people (usually organizers) greet people at the door and take money, invite newcomers to join our mailing list, hand out second-dance-free cards, count the money, pay musicians, caller, and sound man, put out flyers. Old-timers ask newbies how they heard about the dance and how they like it so far (usually at the break, or while waiting for the next walk-through). Organizers sign up for door duty on a six-month schedule, which usually needs to be adjusted as people get otherwise occupied sometimes. Compensation is the undying gratitude of all who have ever gotten to sit at the door. Door sitters usually switch off with one sitting while the other dances. After the break we put out a donation jar for late-comers to make voluntary contributions.
