We have a board member assigned to open each evening. This board member is responsible for putting out flyers plates cups etc and for recruiting people to work the desk. Each volunteer sits the desk for a single dance and is responsible until their replacement arrives. The evenings volunteers are listed so they know who is to replace them. This works well because we are a small community.

In Columbia, MO, we usually have two people (usually organizers) greet people at the door and take money, invite newcomers to join our mailing list, hand out second-dance-free cards, count the money, pay musicians, caller, and sound man, put out flyers. Old-timers ask newbies how they heard about the dance and how they like it so far (usually at the break, or while waiting for the next walk-through). Organizers sign up for door duty on a six-month schedule, which usually needs to be adjusted as people get otherwise occupied sometimes. Compensation is the undying gratitude of all who have ever gotten to sit at the door. Door sitters usually switch off with one sitting while the other dances. After the break we put out a donation jar for late-comers to make voluntary contributions.

Thanks for all input so far. I expect it will help inform our board discussions.
Anyone else?
Cheers,
