The Lenox Dance introduced an offer to have “Sustainers” probably 6-7 years ago. A years dancing for the price of 10 dances. First year when we needed an in fusion of cash we probably had 30+ people. Now it’s more like 15. And one of the big selling points is not worrying about having cash and just being able to walk in. 

Our treasurer checks off when a Sustainer comes in. Then in her accounting she adds 1/12th of the sustainer fund (however much was taken in in January) as income to that dance regardless of how many or few Sustainers actually came. So by December we have 1/12th of that years fund remaining.

It really helps even out our cash flow.

We started this several years ago because we were having cash flow problems and it was useful to collect money up front to allow us to safely book performers months ahead. The folks who opt for this we call, “Sustainers”. My wife and I really like it as we don’t have to bring cash to the dance, although we often throw a few bucks into the snack basket.

The accounting is a little tricky and very occasionally we run the risk of not having enough cash on hand to pay performers in cash but these are very manageable issues.

The Ottawa Contra did this before the pandemic. I've attached a PDF explaining it.
However, when they came back from the pandemic, they moved to sliding scale and got rid of the membership/subscription.

I almost feel as though groups that do that approach might end up feeling a bit more like a club.  I know that's definitely the case with the Ottawa English Country Dance club.

Curious what others are doing.
