Helo!
You are getting this email because you're on the Puttin' On the Dance
<http://www.puttinonthedance.org> email list. If you no longer wish to
receive our messages regarding the POTD conference please email us,
puttinonthedance(a)gmail.com, or simply reply to this email with the word
'cancel' in the subject line.
Below is a message that's also gone out to relevant dance listservs in the
last couple days. As you have shown specific interest in POTD in the past
(or your contact info was forwarded to us by someone who has), we'd really
like to draw your attention to our Programming Survey. The survey will be
going out in less than a week and we're depending on lots and lots of
completed ones coming back by the first week in September--we hope you'll
watch for it!
Thank you,
Tara, for the POTD2 planning committee

Hey all,
Sorry if this is slightly off topic, so I'll be brief.
Our mandolin orchestra, based in Providence RI, is looking for new
members. If you play mandolin, an instrument in the mando family,
classic guitar, or fiddle and would like to become a mando player,
please contact me off list and I will send you further info on
auditions, taking place the first wknd in Aug. Reading a must.
Many thanks,
Paul W.
PS Our rep is quite varied and interesting. Not what you might imagine.
What's a reasonable depreciation schedule for sound equipment? Not that depreciation makes any tax sense for us, but rather, it's a useful way to figure out how much we should budget over time to feed a fund to replace our equipment when it wears out.
Also, I understand there's a Contra sound group or traditional dance sound group or something like that somewhere on the Internet. Can anyone provide me with a lead?
Thanks,
Rich
Hi there,
I’ve asked several folks in the past, but find myself having to do wood
floor research again.
What finish do you put on your wood dance floor?
Are you happy with it?
What is your regular maintenance process?
Thank you,
Lisa

What tool(s) are used to track your club's expenses?
At the first Puttin' on the Dance in 2011 in White River Junction, I heard Rob Lindauer present how the Hartford Dance does it. They have a great alignment across the different dances through the use of a common spreadsheet format for reporting the event results. In addition, they use Quicken for the tax accounting. While our organization doesn't have to file the detailed tax returns (well not yet), I think it'd be good to organize our accounting so it will be easier when the time comes. It doesn't look like Quicken would be the best fit for us, so I'm reaching out to see what else is used.
Thanks!

Hi,
If you play for weddings (the ceremony part) what are some of the tunes that you use?
Our (mainly) old-time dance/background music trio found itself playing for a small, home orchard wedding a few weeks ago. Very last minute with communications hazy so we didn't know exactly what we would be doing until we got there (thank goodness for wedding photographers!). But it didn't rain, the mosquitoes were kind, the wedding went beautifully, and we got by nicely with what we had. The tune ("Waltz of the Little Girls) we thought was going to be "ceremony music" (they didn't have any) worked for the bridal party entrance and we even managed the "here comes the bride" march. They exited nicely to "Mairi's Wedding" (walking speed), and a key and speed change got the guests up and moving. A few hours just wasn't quite enough for us to comfortably play the usual (is it still usual??) Mendelssohn's Wedding March.
We don't plan to become a wedding band but we realize this could happen again and would like to have a few more appropriate tunes to draw on. Lover's Waltz we have, and the Wedding March (now) but a few more would be nice. Any general wedding suggestions appreciated as well! (such as, make sure you have chairs nearby to sit on so you don't have to stand with your instruments during the whole ceremony when you realize there is nothing nearby to sit on and no way to nicely remove yourselves (and get back for the exit) once the ceremony started) (thankfully, it wasn't a long one).

*Puttin’ On the Dance 2 (POTD2): Hands Across the Border*
*Come meet other organizers, share ideas and experiences, learn new
strategies for creating successful dances, and more. We’ll also dance, eat,
and have fun with our organizer peers!*
*WHAT?*
In November 2011, the first <http://www.puttinonthedance.org/>*Puttin' On
the Dance* <http://www.puttinonthedance.org/> convened 78 dance organizers
for a conference in White River Junction, VT. POTD was packed with
workshops, discussions, dancing and more! Many dance communities benefited
in significant ways from this weekend, and it was clear an event like this
should happen every few years. (See
<http://www.puttinonthedance.org/post-conference/testimonials/>testimonials
<http://www.puttinonthedance.org/post-conference/testimonials/>.) POTD2
will provide resources and opportunities for learning, sharing, and
renewal! We’ll strengthen networks for sustaining the dance traditions we
love throughout our region.
*WHO?*
For organizers of any American/English dance series! This includes contra,
English country, community/family, square, Quebecois, Cape Breton, and
other American and Canadian social dance. *ALL dance organizers are
welcome to attend! *We are specifically targeting in eastern Canada and the
northeastern U.S.: New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts,

<http://www.puttinonthedance.org/register/fund-your-attendance/> (updated
version for the SW conference here
<http://cdss.org/swroc/register/fund-your-attendance/>) you and your group
can help pay your way including travel costs. More information on costs and
registration will be available later in the summer.
*WHERE?*
Ottawa, Ontario
*WHY CANADA?*
The first POTD was co-sponsored by many dance organizations, including
the Country
Dance and Song Society <http://www.cdss.org/>. After supporting
<http://www.cdss.org/conferences.html>several conferences
<http://www.cdss.org/conferences.html> throughout the U.S. since 2006, CDSS
recently decided it’s time to help a conference happen in Canada. The
Ottawa dance contra community sent three of their dance organizers to the
first POTD. Those individuals and their local dance organization are
thrilled to help catalyze the next conference in the Northeast Region – on
their home turf. A reminder, passports are required for travel to Canada by
US Citizens. Plan ahead!

We'll keep you posted with updates! Meanwhile...
*Please help us spread the word.* Forward this message to:

Dear Shared Weight community,
Many of you received a "you've been unsubscribed" email this morning!
I'm terribly sorry about that. Yahoo/Comcast/Hotmail recently turned on
some very strong spam filtering which broke nearly every mailing list on
the internet. It finally affected us today.
I have quickly moved the site to an updated version of Mailman (the
software that runs this list) which has some options to deal with this.
Primarily, the "From" address is now the list address. The Reply-To
address should be the original sender. We'll see how this goes.
If you received that email, you can ignore it. I have re-subscribed
you. If you did not get a bounce noticed, then you have nothing to
worry about. Note that if you used to get digest messages, you are now
getting regular emails. I have not carried that setting over from the
old server yet.
Please hang in there with us as we figure this out and get it all
working again.
If you need to change your settings, go to this page:
http://lists.sharedweight.net/options.cgi/musicians-sharedweight.net
Enter your email address at the top, then click the Remind button at the
bottom. You will be sent your password in the mail. Then you can log
in and change your deliver options.
MAJOR CHANGE: Note that the "From" address of this message is actually
the list address. The Reply-To should be my address. This is not
ideal, but it is what I have to work with right now. Please hang in there.
Thanks,
Seth & Chris
