Looks like the video has a tambourine under on the left foot and a
Wild Dog stomp box under their right, I think the
Dingo.
Stomp boxes are a nice way of getting a kick-like thumpy sound with much less hassle than a traditional kick bass drum. A lot of them are analog (some sort of shell around a piezo) though I think I've seen
Nova playing with a digital one (
Roland SPD::ONE?)
I've tried a few different ones in my playing and ended up using
beaterless kick pedals with the
brain from an electronic drum kit. One thing I really like about this setup is I can change how the drums sound depending on what I'm doing (traditional vs electronic) and I can even send the signal to a little computer and play bass with them.
If you're getting started, I think the main question is what direction you want to go? If you just want a thumpy kick sort of sound, tapping your foot, a simple stomp box (maybe something like the
Meinl) is good. If you want to play drumkit with your feet, then I'd recommend either something like the
Farmer Footdrum (analog) or patching together beaterless kicks and an old electronic drum brain like I do (or see
Mezerg for a higher-end setup).
