While I agree that you could circle left, it's not quite "just as easily"; the chain / courtesy turn / circle right has an unbroken flow - if you do it right; gent has to bring the lady around and point her in the right direction - and chain/courtesy turn / circle left means you finish the courtesy turn (CCW rotation), stop, and circle left, although you can blur that with a twirl rather than a courtesy turn. 

I think circle-right-with-lady-in-the-lead is somewhat awkward - you've got to change hands, which can be facilitated with a star-thru kind of twirl that damps the circular motion - more awkward than circle-right-with-gent-in-the-lead but less awkward than circle left with gent in the lead.
