Hello Shared Weight,
Just feeling particularly grateful to the community of callers and
organizers out there. Thank you to all of you for the work that you do. I
believe it helps build stronger, more connected communities, and a better
world.
I personally lose sight of that sometimes, especially at year's end when
things get hectic. But whatever you're celebrating this weekend and holiday
season, my thanks go to you.
Take care,

Here's what I actually called on post-election Wednesday in Baltimore:
Long May It Wave (Melanie Axel-Lute)
The Eyes Have It
Vote With Your Feet (Bob Isaacs)
Take All of the Credit and None of the Blame (Larry Edelman)
Not a Figment of Your Imagination (Lynn Ackerson)
The Dancer's Duty (Chris Page)
Kitchen Stomp (Becky Hill)
Break
United We Dance (Bob Isaacs)
The Tease (Tom Hinds)
There Is No Way to Peace, Peace Is the Way (Erik Hoffman)
Illegal in Most States (Robert Cromartie)
Jubilation (Gene Hubert)
[A little backstory -- I run a dance camp called FootFall. To avoid using
gazillions of paper cups at meals and dumping them in the landfill, every
year we provide all dancers with a travel mug (labeled with their names).
Every year it's a different color, and it has a different dance-related quote
on it.]
Thursday morning, I got the following email from someone who had been at
the Baltimore Wednesday night dance::
"My FootFall mug in my office says, 'We do not always dance because we are
happy, but we dance and cannot help but become happy.' Last night,
post-election, was such a night."
April Blum
I calling the Baltimore contra on Wednesday.
Vote With Your Feet of course.
Others I am considering are:
Take All of the Credit and None of the Blame
The Eyes Have It
Illegal in Most States
Not a Figment of Your Imagination
Rocks and Dirt
In Cahoots
Chaos Pie
Blueshift
The Dancer's Duty
Long May It Wave
There Is No Way to Peace
Any other suggestions?
April Blum
Yes, it was, and Liz is one of ours. :)

That's a Liz Albert dance, and it goes like this:
Swing States
A1: long lines forward and back, swing neighbor
AS: Long lines forward and back, swing next neighbor
B1: Circle left three places, swing partner on side
B2: Ladies chain across, circle right, open up into long lines
Liz says she named it "Swing States" because of the go left/ go right
motion in the dance.

There's a dance, I think by a choreographer in Chicago, called "Swing
States". I was in a hall when it was announced, but don't have more than
that. Sorry I didn't get it to the list in time. I've been distracted
lately...
Here's one, from after the fact.
"You can't always get what you want"
Improper
A1
Mad robin around neighbor 1x (sea-saw style, gents in front first)
Circle Right 1x
A2
Half poussette with partner, men push first, women push back
Gypsy Star Right 1x (take inside hands across with same role, gents right,
ladies left)
B1
Women pull by left to start a full hey (left with same role in middle,
right with opposite role on outside)
B2
Neighbor Gypsy and Swing
I don't think I'll ever call it. But at least I can rest assured that Bob
Isaacs probably didn't write it first ;-)

I see a story line in the moves of this dance that I like; the
Wednesdays after elections, we go back to our daily routines, connecting
at work and in the neighborhood and with best friends, and encountering
new folks as well.
Our contra dance communities are a microcosm [albeit samplings as
opposed to representations] of the larger population. The people who
commute at the same times and along the same routes everyday are still
the ones with whom we share the road so that everyone arrives home
safely. The wait staff at the restaurant, the baggers and cashiers at
our most frequented stores are the same, and we interact with them in
the same, hopefully kind and courteous, ways as we did before. Who we've
elected does not change our human connections. We get to choose how we
interact with/cooperate with/share kindnesses with in all of our circles
of influence.
I admit to hoping for one of those magical fixes last night that often
occurs with an evening of dancing , and to being less able to soak it
up, less able to contribute to the possibility, but today I am better
for having gone than I could possibly have been if I had stayed home and
missed the car pool conversation, the favorite tunes, the eye contact,
and the swings that, for the moment, put us both in balance.
How fortunate are we all for being able to dance our lives....
