Hi,
In United We Dance, by Bob Isaacs, I am curious how you tell people to
re-form the long wavy lines after the star in B2, to continue the dance. To
set up these lines from an improper formation before the dance starts it
seems sufficient to me just to tell the men to turn and face out and take
their neighbors right in their right. It is the transition from the star
left that ends the dance to that long wavy line that puzzles me some for
the women. It seems that the men can naturally end that star facing out,
but it seems that the women will end that star also facing out and will need
to take an extra turn to face in to set up that long wavy line for the
continuation of the dance. How do you tell folks to make this transition?
Other comments are, of course welcome, but it is this transition that, for
the women, I am wondering about. The full dance is below. Thanks,

For one thing, I would recommend that you specify
wrist grip stars. If you're doing a wrist grip
star, the gent will already have his (previous)
neighbor's wrist in his left hand. As they
finish the star, look for your new neighbor and
give them a right hand, catch previous neighbor
by the left hand and you're in the new waves. As
they finish the star, the gents will already be
facing slightly out of the set, and the ladies
will be facing slightly into the set, making it
easy to form the wave with the gents facing out and the ladies facing in.

At the end of B2.1 the ladies, having completed a chain to the neighbor
and a courtesy turn, are naturally facing in, so it should be
straightforward that a left-hand star once around will bring them back
to this place, facing in, at which point new neighbors give right hands
to each other and the dance begins again. While teaching the dance, an
instruction to "keep left hand with your old neighbor, give right hand
to your new neighbor" as the star ends should orient everyone

Rickey,
It might help dancers to know that at the long wavy lines, the neighbor in
their right hand at the beginning of the dance will be in their left hand at
the end of the dance, which is aided by the left hand star.
Perhaps if you suggest the man GENTLY take the left hand of the women in
front of him at the end of the star (original neighbor) and face out, that
would guide both of them to the correct position. The women coming at him
from his right will be his new neighbor for the next round of the dance.
This is a very nice transition. It'll be fun to experiment with it in some
new dances.

On the transition, I don't have much to add beyond Bob's and Jack's good
advice - indeed, I use many of Bob's words when teaching it. When calling it, I make
sure to use some leading patter early on for the ladies chain to get them on time. The
star into the wave is tight, and any late groups may miss the first balance but perhaps
reach for the wrong R hand.
This dance was written on 9/12/01, which explains the title. As for Mark's comment
about other dances, the one that inpsired this was written a month before;
