Hi all,
I hesitate to make my first post to a new (to me) list be about culturally sensitive
terminology because I fear that that sometimes stirs up controversy, but this is a
remarkable coincidence:
I finally got around to joining this list yesterday because I wanted to ask the list
whether anyone knows a less objectionable term for the Dixie Twirl move: I encountered the
move in a dance I was interested in learning to call,
but I’d be unwilling to call using a dance term with the word “Dixie” in it. Then I
realized I could just say “middles arch, rights lead under” and thus both avoid the term
“Dixie” and avoid making my first post on this group be about culturally sensitive
terminology. :-)
But then in receiving my very first Caller’s Digest, I see a recommendation for using the
term Dixie in a dance name. So I’m getting up my courage to post, hoping that I’m not
wading into a hornet’s nest...
I would recommend against using Dixie in a dance name or even using it as a dance term.
Please allow me to explain:
I lived in Alabama for 14 years. In my personal experience, Dixie is a term that is nearly
always used by white people with warped nostalgia for the antebellum South (choosing to
ignore the fact that things weren’t so great for black residents back then). I find that
glorifying “Dixie” is done by the same folks who glorify the rebel (confederate) flag:
It’s done supposedly in the name of honoring heritage, but its closeted purpose is to
express longing for the "Good Old Days" when whites were in charge and blacks
were subordinate.

lady/robin on the right walks to far side, inverting the line
(8) Come back up the hall and bend the ends

(6) Circle left 3/4
(10) Partners swing
B2 -----------
(8) Gents/Larks chain (pull by left, courtesy turn with neighbor)
(8) Right-hand star 1x
I'm planning on using Gene's original tonight in Belfast (and probably
the vast majority of the time, it's a great dance); but I thought an
accessible gents/larks chain would be nice.
I appreciate hearing your thoughts.

Hi Becky,
The most common alternative term I hear is "Thread the Needle". Thanks for
your post. It definitely merits consideration. One other term out there
that may need revising is "Nantucket Sleighride". (

"Sow the Wheat".

I rather like the term Greg Frock's suggestion (not claimed to be original) of
"Thread the Needle". While I've heard "Thread the Needle" used
with other meanings, I think there's little danger of confusion in the contra context,
especially since that the action is rare enough that the caller will presumably need to
teach it.

but I think "Thread the Needle" would be just fine.

Thread the needle is a whole set move in ceilidh and ECD using an arch at
the end of lines, I wouldn't recommend it as a replacement for a Dixie
twirl for this reason.

"Thread the Needle" seems to be a reasonable description of the move and
easy to remember, especially if the caller teaches it carefully and
associates the name with that move.
Regardless of the cultural/historical implications of "Dixie Twirl", the
name Dixie Twirl is one more code phrase that dancers would have to
remember. Whenever possible, I prefer using terminology that has visual
associations with the actual dance move. (Said by someone who calls
square dances with all sorts of code words at high speed.)

I call lots of dances with Thread the Needle and it is never called by itself. First you
have to tell the dancers who is making the arch. This is normally an end-of-line couple,
so it is obvious that the other end of the line is doing the threading.
For a Dixie Twirl you would need to say, “Middles Arch, Ladies (or whoever is on the
appropriate end of the line) Thread the Needle”. But that still doesn’t tell the poor guy
at the other end of the line where to go.
So I wouldn’t ever use “Thread the Needle” for this move.
Other similar moves such as Right Hand High and Left Hand Low, Rip ‘n’ Snort,
Mountaineer’s Loop, etc. don’t quite fit either.
If I wanted to avoid giving it a name and adding more jargon, then I would teach the move
during the walk-through without using any jargon then tell them it is a bit like a
California Twirl for couples, so all I am going to call it “Twirl”!
Note: It is important to teach the timing during the walk-through. Many dancers will go
down the hall for eight before starting the twirl and wonder why they keep crashing into
other lines. The timing is:
Down the Hall (4)
Twirl (4)
Up the Hall (4)
Bend the Line (4)
Of course it is always helpful, if half of the dancers know the move before you teach it,
to let them know what you are doing, so I might well say, “This next move used to be known
as a Dixie Twirl; I am just going to call Twirl”.

Four, or an Arch and Swap (taught this way):
In a line-of-4 facing all the same, middles raise an arch and, keeping
hands, right-hand pair goes under the arch (led by end dancer) while left-hand pair cross
over to the other side (led by the end dancer).
End result is the same line-of-4, facing back the other way, much as a
California Twirl does for 2 dancers.
This description also avoids any gender-specific terms in case that’s an offense issue for
others.

Sorry, but I don't understand how the term Dixie Twirl can be considered to be
culturally sensitive.
There are over twenty towns in the USA called Dixie. I haven't heard of any plans to
change their name by them, or Winn-Dixie, or the Dixie Chicks, or countless other
organisations with Dixie in their name.
Surely it requires both context and intent for a term to be considered negative. In the
fun context of a contra dance, with no intent to offend anyone, I don't understand how
the use of a common word can be considered offensive.
I don't expect these arguments to sway those who have already made their mind up. And
I really don't want to turn this into an ongoing debate. This is really just to let
you know that I strongly believe that those who wish to continue to use the term Dixie
Twirl (and other such terms) should be allowed to do so without being criticised and
without anyone taking offense.

Thanks for weighing in! We're glad to have you on the list, and I
personally appreciate the cultural context you've provided.
While some callers may continue to use the term Dixie, I think it benefits
even them to have the insight into the phrases nuances.
I hope you find the list-serv useful sounds like there are some viable
options for you to avoid calling it a dixie twirl.
