Hi all,
I'm preparing for a workshop at a dance weekend in November where the theme
will be contra dances that incorporate square dance moves.
I have a number dances with square thrus and swing thrus and box
circulates. However, these moves are fairly well known at this point. This
will be an advanced group of dancers so I'm looking for dances that
incorporate more unique and sophisicated moves.
I know Bob Isaacs has several that quality, with dances that use Spin the
Top and Spin Chain Exchange the Gears.
Looking forward to seeing what you may have.

Highly recommend Dale Wilson's Gold Star Wednesday - I added Dale to this reply and
he can fill you in on a teaching secret. It contains the star inversion that comes from
square dancing.
Also Rang Tang Contra by Ridge Kennedy comes to mind - it uses the Georgia Rang Tang
figure.
Kath Anderson's Deep Well uses a figure she saw clogers performing - does that count?

Here is one of mine that I have used successfully many times, though the main figure is
drawn more from the Southern Square tradition than the Western tradition:
Sow the Wheat Contra (improper) Chuck Abell 1/15
A1 Bal and swing N (16)
A2 Gents alle left 1 1/2x (8) (8)
P swing (8)
B1 Ladies chain (8)
Circle left 1x, gents roll P across set (8)
B2 Bal the ring (4)
Sow the wheat/mow the clover 1 1/2x, ones duck first (12)*
w/ new N….
* Twos arch, ones duck under, then back up arching over the twos, then duck again to
progress. Basically an inside dosido 1 1/2x while holding partner’s hand (which is an
option for any one with shoulder issues)
An easier variation on the B part (good for beginners):
B1 Ladies Chain
Bal ring, roll P across
B2. Bal the ring, Sow the wheat/mow the clover (16)

It is not that challenging. however the dance that inspired it is. Luke
Donforth has one where the grand square is on the diagonal that was the
inspiration for my dance. That dance is deceptively challenging...It makes
keeping your role straight on the grand square take serious concentration.
I don;t remember the name of the dance, perhaps you could contact Luke for
it.

This contra has a miniaturized grand square for 4.
*Mini Grand Swing *improper by Jim Hemphill
To start, face your neighbor, 2's step apart, 1's step forward between
A1 Handy Hand allemande 1 1/2
2's swing*
A2 Neighbor balance and swing
B1 Long lines
1's swing, end with all facing across**
B2 Mini grand square, 1's apart, 2's come together. 1's up, 2's down.
1's together, 2's apart. 1's down, 2's up and on to next.
Teaching Notes: * The transition between A1 and A2 is a bit unusual in that
couple 1 ends up slightly below couple 2 coming out of the handy hand
allemande, so it really works nicely for couple 2 to end their swing facing
down and gent 2 twirl the lady across to the neighbor for the swing. For
the mini grand square have couple 1 remain close together and all face
their partner at the end of the couple 1 swing, use same rythm as a normal
grand square, 1,2,3, turn. 1's take 3 small steps apart then turn up set
while the 2's take 3 small steps together and turn down, couples take 3
small steps up/down hall then turn to face across: 2's take 3 steps apart
and turn up, 1's 3 steps together then turn down: on the last leg couples
take 4 steps up/down to progress to next neighbors.. Emphasize dancers
travel up the outside and down the inside.

Grand Square Contra:
Forward and Back, all swing corner
Sides face, Grand Square
Reverse
Side couples pass thru, Head couples pass thru, all swing partner and face

Bill Olsen called a dance at dawn dance a while ago with a mini-grand square on the
diagonal. That was cool. I think he wrote it.
And Kathy A called something at flurry last year with a right and left through and then
the ladies slide right and across the set to take hands in a short wavy line across. It
was neat. I think she called it a "right and left by"

There are some others. Seth Topher and I have each written one with Spin the top.
I wrote one, not a great dance, with single circle to an ocean wave. It's in my first
book. If you don't have it I'll be glad to send it to you.
Tag the line is in many dances including a nice one written by Bob D. I must say that
some interpretations of tag the line have been way off the mark.
I used scoot back in my dance, Lisa's Contra although I don't call it that.
Flutter wheel has been used by many. Flutterwheel and reverse the flutter is in one of
mine called The Mixing Bowl is you're looking for a challenging dance.
You may want to take a look at Steve Schnur's 24 of June (or is it January). As I
understand it the dance was written without his knowing about the MWSD circulate family of
moves.
Don't forget pass the ocean. Turn through is sometimes used in combination with swing
through like in Batja's Breakdown.

The dance needs plenty of space along the line.
After the Petronella in A1 the dancers are in a line of four across the set, ladies facing
in and men facing out.
You work with your neighbor for the whole dance, except for the final swing.
The movement in B2 is like a Give and Take except that no-one ?takes? - you just move
forward and swing your partner in the center.
It is nice to end the swing in B1 opened out to face partner but keeping arms behind your
