Thanks Everyone,

It's confirmed to be by Roy Dommett and its various publishings. Thanks for everyone's input on this.

I could have sworn that it was originally a more improper dance, as in it could not be danced proper also. But I guess I just tweaked some of the figures to be more contra-ish and easier for my dancers. I really appreciate contras where you can be on either side:

A1: Partner RH turn
      Neighbour LH turn
A2  1's balance and swing
B1  Circle Left
       Circle right
B2  Duck  and arch past two couples
       Do-si-do third couple

It's now double progression. Does this dance already exist?

Thanks,

Greg

Hi Greg. It's by Roy Dommett. The dance is published as duple improper in "Zesty Contras" by Larry Jennings. It's dance #208 in the book, on page 44. I've typed the instructions and Larry's comments from the book. The code 58CJgi on the second line: I'm not clear on the numbers (one of them is probably the piece count, but someone more familiar with Larry's book can chime in), but according to the book's appendix, C=Significantly unequal; J=Contains figures which have sophisticated flow (English feeling), advanced basics; g=Tends to drift down; i=A short set is preferable.

ELLEN'S GREEN JIG by Roy Dommett
Duple & improper: 58CJgi
1. Dsd below
2. Act dsd
3&4. Act bal & sw
5. Cir L
6. Cir R
7&8. Act duck under an arch of #2 (3); bk (3); #2 duck under an arch of act (3); bk (3); act duck through to next cpl

Ph 7&8: This "dive for the oyster, dig for the clam" action, at a slower pace, is part of the New England square dance tradition, but is unusual in contras. Instead of ducking and backing, a zesty ducking couple can turn under joined arms, let those arms lead them to return, and then unwind as they pull the other couple under for a duck.

Roy's knowledge of morris dancing is encyclopedic and his enthusiasm for sharing unlimited; he is an honorary member of the Black Jokers, my morris team, and I couldn't resist including his dance.

Ellen's Green is the town in Surrey where Roy invented the dance on the spur of the moment at an OXFAM benefit.

With thanks to Hugh Stewart's online dance data base, which pointed me to the Zesty Contras book for this dance: https://www.cambridgefolk.org.uk/dance_index/dance_index.html

Hi Folks,

I'm teaching a contra dance tonight for a special event. I wanted to double check my sources and came up short on one dance:

Ellen's Green Jig.

According to my memory, I tweaked this dance years ago to be proper/improper. However, the original I can no longer find. Furthermore, my notes say it was originally by Roy Dommett, the famed rocket scientist morris dancer. Does that make any sense?

Does anyone know this dance or who devised it?

Thanks!
