Hi Amy,

              The original terminology is:

Everyone in one line: Major Set

The number of people in each subset: Minor Set

Duple Minor: Each Minor Set is made of two couples, i.e. four dancers

Triple Minor: Each Minor Set is made of three couples, i.e. six dancers

Duple is shorthand for the four people in a Duple Minor Set.

In the 18th century the Triple Minor was the standard.  In the 20th and 21st centuries the Duple Minor is the standard.

            Happy dancing,

                   John
