I don't know about trios, but The Spanish Waltz is a dance we did for years in our English Country Dancing group in highschool. It sort of sounds like the dance you described.

I'm sharing a video of the dance with you. In the video, it's done in a single line, but we would usually do it in a closed circle with couples facing one another around the circle.
