Interesting, I learned the Jack Turn Back as “The Cottontail Rag” by Steve Schnur. Now I wonder… It adapts well for 7 and ok with 9.

Another trick I learned from Cammy Kaynor: 5 or 7 couples? Do double progression dances, that way you dance with everyone in the line and don’t wait out long.

Then there’s the nine-pin, which I know has a codified version in Scotland dance collections, but I play with it: head couples star, side couples star, all four couples star, or heys or experiment.

I’ve never called it as the first time a bunch of us danced it to Sandy Bradley’s calling: The Strip Nine-Pin, where when a new nine-pin is found the music stops and the new nine-pin has to take of one piece of clothes. Luckily no one lost a ring or earring… And we were outside in Oak Park in Santa Barbara (CA) back when the Harvest Moon Festival was held there. Totally fun and funny!

Unexpected circumstances gave me 5 dancers a couple years ago, and I wrote Tighten Your Lugnuts on the fly: https://contradb.com/dances/2387

It's nice enough that I wrote it down and call it at cider presses or other "places I'm randomly at and someone requests a dance".

If I remember correctly, Levi Jackson's Rag is for 7 dancers? I haven't called that myself.
