I first learned to call from Sandy Bradley when she traveled with the Gypsy Gyppo String Band in the late 70s to the Augusta Dance Week in Elkins, West Virginia (where I was living at that time). Before that, I had never held a mic in my hand, let alone tell a group of people what to do. Warren Argo was in the band. He was thin back then.

I was entranced. When Sandy called, the energy and excitement in the room went through the roof - everyone was grinning, the room was filled with joy, lots of whooping and laughter. I had never seen or experienced anything like it. I knew then that I wanted to call like that - - bring so much joy to a crowd. Sandy could bring that to the room, and to me that was what a caller should do.

I remember my first experience dancing with Sandy Bradley when she came to Boston some time in the late 60s or early 70s and did a workshop on western style squares. I was so excited about the different style and feel of them to the New England and southern squares I was used to. After moving to Michigan we invited her several times to call our dances, which we held then in a bar on the shore of a pretty lake.
