Locally, this is known as the Serpentine dance. I and another caller have regularly called it at Old Town State Park for regular dancers and park visitors.

The choreo is largely improvised, with certain moves being regularly used.

It helps if some of the dancers are experienced or otherwise know what will happen so that when you (the caller/dance leader) approaches them you can duck between them to lead the line through itself (one possible move in the dance).

Here are my notes on Serpentine. Would be happy to answer any questions if something isn't easy to figure out:

Serpentine
Big Circle (20 people?), No Partner

Stretch Circle out, enabling more spirals

Opening Segment:

Circle L (16 steps)

F & B (i.e., Forward & Back)
F & B

Circle R (16 steps)

F & B

Spiral Segment:

Circle L + Break (Spiral In)

At center:

· Reverse direction (Spiral Out)

· Duck between two people

At edge:

· Reverse direction

· Duck between two people

· Rejoin to form single circle

I am calling a friend's wedding this weekend and she requested "the spiral dance," a circle dance where at some point one person leads everyone into a spiral (or, optionally, anywhere around the hall?).
