the issue I thought of with a rope or scarf-type-thing is you are still going to hold something that someone else held.

Wouldn't it be cool if we could devise some sort of a stick with a hook on the end, where each person could keep their own for the duration of the dance?

so you would hook your stick onto someone else's - that way everyone keeps distance and everyone holds their own stick AND you get to enjoy centripetal force!!

Was trying to think if there was a tool or a kid's toy that was shaped like this...nothing has come to mind yet.

Subject: [Callers] Re: Distance "contra" dance choreo?

I don't think it's safe yet, but for "someday," as a transitional thing as we ease back in, I have been pondering the scene from Fiddler on the Roof, where the old Rabbi whips out his little handkerchief so he can dance with a woman without touching her, per the prevailing culture of the time.  I have this flimsy towel I got at the gym -- it's smaller and thinner than a regular bath towel, but bigger than a hand towel.  I wonder if it would work to have two people hang onto the ends to create the centripetal force to swing.  But it still wouldn't be 6 feet of distance.  So then I start wondering about using ropes or tie-down straps, with loops on the ends, so you could hold on without getting rope burns.  But even if it worked, a 6-foot swing radius PER couple feels pretty difficult, logistically.  You'd need a football field, and still wouldn't be able to accommodate very many couples.  (There's a little math problem for your kids for their free time).

Not sure anyone will take this anywhere, but I've wondered about it as I watch zoom videos of people swinging with ghosts in their backyards.

Circles, square sets and contradance - you need to take hands.  It's what it is.

Easy on the "call out" culture.

And they also said Zoom Contra would never happen?

To each his own. It is not for everyone.

However, putting down others’ ideas and calling names is not part of dealing with the changes our dance community is going through.

Again I am asking for on topic replies about what distanced choreo might look like?  Feel free to just delete this email.

The idea of having distance contra dancing is pure insanity as contra dancing is a 100 % social activity

Hello Callers !

Wondering if anyone has written some “contra” dances that maintain 6 feet distance?

I’m imagining trying (narrow)pool noodles to use as spacers (outdoors).  Maybe cut to 3 foot lengths with magnets at the ends to clack & connect to the next noodle.

I know someone doing Intl Folk with ribbons and they were shared by accident, and are obviously too flexible to help keep distance.

I can also see it being more like solo dancing with “contra” moves in HUGE figures (more aerobic?) or maybe something totally different?

If you’d like to chat about choreo ideas for distanced outdoor (masks, gloves, etc) “contra” dances, please email me.

I believe there will be intermediate stages of coming back to dance and we can try when County and State Health limitations allow (Mine just opened up for out door gatherings last week).

(I’m very aware of the issues, the research about covid, and our State and County Health regulations.) I’m looking for conversation about what coming back to dancing might look like, and choreography to support this that is fun.

Thanks for your on-topic replies.

Best,
Claire Takemori (CA)
